New York Quarterly seeks work that advances the magazine’s history of publishing an eclectic cross-section of contemporary poetry since its founding by William Packard in 1969. NYQ looks for poems that offer fresh perspectives and pay careful attention to craft. Like New York itself, NYQ aims to be diverse, inclusive, and wildly wonderful. We at NYQ are more interested in the craft of the poem than the credentials of the poet. Send us poems that make us think and feel in your individual voice!

Please do not submit AI-generated work.

We accept online submissions (3-5 poems per submission) through Submittable only. We accept simultaneous submissions, but please promptly notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.

  • We only publish poetry.
  • Submit between three and five poems of any style or form in one document (.doc, .docx, or .pdf).
  • Make sure that your poems have been proofread and appear exactly as you want. You will have an opportunity to proof your poem before publication, but not to revise it.
  • We do not require a cover letter, but please enter a brief biographical statement.
  • Simultaneous submissions are encouraged, but please inform us of any acceptance elsewhere immediately. In order to withdraw only select poems from your packet, please send us a note on the message function of Submittable.
  • Previously published poems will not be considered. We consider poems to have been previously published if they have been selected for publication by a curated venue. This includes new versions of a previously published poem.
  • Please do not submit wholly or partially AI-generated poems.
  • Please wait for a response before submitting again.
  • We ask for first world serial rights, after which we retain the right to include your poem in anthologies of NYQ poems, such as a "Best of," and the right to maintain the poem indefinitely on our website. All other rights return to the author upon publication. Please credit NYQ accordingly in any future publications of the poem.
  • We only accept submissions through Submittable. Unsolicited email submissions or submissions sent via the postal service will not be considered.
  • If you feel that you absolutely cannot afford the submission fee, please email info@nyq.org.
  • Poems will appear online in one of the upcoming issues of our choice. At this time, we can only offer compensation through publication.
  • We look forward to reading your poems!
